His breadth of experience demonstrates a lifelong commitment to the business of security as well as the importance of training as a critical success factor. Dan got his start with the RCMP in 1972. After seven formative years working as a constable in the Vancouver Lower Mainland, he established his own security company in Alberta. Under his leadership and direction, the operation became the largest security provider in Calgary with revenues exceeding $12 million. In 1999, the company was sold to a major American security provider where Dan supported the transition as Vice President Western Canada overseeing a staff of 800 guards. Career opportunity took him next into the international arena where he lent his security expertise to Canadian Nexen, a global energy provider with significant operations in the Republic of Yemen. There his experience was put to the test during a terrorist attack on a French oil tanker that garnered international attention. Dan was responsible for mobilizing marine forces in response.
In 2005, Dan joined BC Hydro as Chief Security Officer where he was tasked with spearheading the development of a fully integrated security program for over 400 facilities and providing critical infrastructure protection. During his tenure, he successfully won executive approval to implement a five year $40M anti-terrorism plan and three year $12M property and building security plan. Dan continued in a consulting capacity with BC Hydro, working on Vancouver’s 2010 Olympics, where his expertise in critical infrastructure protection was key. Prior to joining Commissionaires BC, he acted as Director of Major Accounts, Western Canada for GardaWorld, a primary, worldwide security enterprise.
Dan furthers his passion for security and risk management as a long time and active participant in the American Society for Industrial Security (ASIS) International. A Certified Protection Professional since 1985, he is currently the Chairman of the Canadian Pacific Chapter.
